The Spanish colonization of America (Conquista) began with the discovery of the first islands of the Caribbean by Christopher Columbus in 1492. Throughout the XVI century, impoverished Spanish knights and adventurers in large and small groups advanced deep into the American continent, crushing the ancient empires of the Indians. The main military conflicts: the conquest of Mexico by Cortez, the defeat of the Inca Empire, the conquest of the Yucatan and the disappearance of the Mayan civilization.
